Massachusetts General Hospital is a Level
1 Adult and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. MGH
has been verified as able to treat the highest
severity of trauma patient. MGH admits, on average,
2,000 trauma patients and another 2,000 emergency
surgery patients per year, and although the vast
majority of our patients are from the Boston metropolitan
area, patients are referred to our facility from
all over the country.
The
Trauma Center Team provides 24-hour coverage
for trauma and emergency surgery cases. The around-the-clock
physician presence, along with the excellent multidisciplinary
collaboration with specialists in Orthopaedics,
Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery and many other services
provides for the ideal management and treatment
options for trauma and emergency surgery patients.
It takes a whole team of surgeons, nurses, physical
and occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains,
respiratory therapists, and others to help patients
regain good health and function.
The physical proximity with the Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital and close association
with multiple similar facilities in Massachusetts
allows integrated care from initial assessment to
follow-up care and rehabilitation.
MGH is also a Level 1 Burn
Center and one of a few centers around the country
that have the highest level of accreditation by
the American College of Surgeons in adult trauma
care, pediatric trauma care, and burn care. This
enables us to offer care for the whole family in
one location, should multiple members of the same
family experience traumatic injury.
The MGH Neurointensive Care Unit is a state-of-the-art
18 bed ICU supported by 6-8 full time dedicated
Neuro ICU fellows, 8 intensivist faculty, 24 hour
video-EEG, portable CT capability, 64-slice helical
CT and 1.5-3.0 T MRI with 3D imaging available at
all times.
