Interesting, but I could not find a discussion of how the piratical beam is shaped or conformed to a given area within the body.

My Mother was just told that she has cancer in her lung and the left frontal part of her brain. She start treatment this week. I want to know if this therapy is given for my Mom's cancer. Loma Linda Hospital out here does, but it looks as if it is done only for prostate cancer. I would appreicate any information that would give us some hope...

I HAVE A GRADE 4 GBM IN OCCIPTIAL REGION AFFECTING MY VISION- DIAGNOSED SEPTEMBER 01. I HAVE HAD SURGERY, 6 WKS OF RADIATION, 2 ROUNDS OF TEMODAR, AM CURRENTLY ON 600 MG OF DILANTIN, 4 MG OF DECADRON,HYDRODYURIL FOR ELEVATED BP, AND A NUMBER OF OTHER MEDS THAT I AKE AS NEEDED (ANTIVERT, NYSTATIN, XANAX, DILAUDID AND PRESCRIPTION PEPCID. I AM GOING FOR MY 5TH MRI ON FRIDAY FEB 1. I HAVE 2 REQUESTS - I WOULD LIKE THE NAME OF A GOOD NEURO ONCOLOGIST IN THE GREATER DETROIT AREA - I HAVE A NEUROSURGEON, A NEUROLOGIST, AN A RADIATION ONCOLOGIST AND A NEURO OPTHAMOLOGIST - AND I LIKE AND TRUST THEM ALL, HOWEVER NONE OF THEM SPECIALIZE OR KNOW A GREAT DEAL ABOUT GBM. MY SECOND QUESTION IS i KNOW MY PROGNOSIS IS 6 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AS THE DESEASE PROGRESSES. DO THE SEIZURES INCREASE IN FREQUENCY, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS COULD TURN INTO LEUKEMIA, I'VE BEEN TOLD I MIGHT ACTUALLY DIE FROM A STROKE, ETC ETC. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH THIS FOR THEMSELVES OR A FAMILY MEMBER WHO HAS BEEN A SUPPORT FOR A GBM PATIENT. I DO NOT INTEND TO BE MORBID IN MY QUEST, I JUST WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I CAN EXPECT IN THE MONTHS TO COME SO THAT I CAN MAKE THE APPROPRIATE MEDICAL AND MORAL DECISIONS. I HAVE FOUND MOST PHYSICIANS ARE VERY EVASIVE WHEN ASKED THESE QUESTIONS - AND I UNDERSTAND THEIR MOTIVES, BUT I NEED ANSWERS. ALSO - MOST CANCER PATIENTS LOSE WEIGHT DURING THEIR ILLNESS, HOWEVER, I HAVE BALLOONED UP 35 LBS SINCE SEPTEMBER AND CAN'T SEEM TO LOSE AN OUNCE. I HAVE TRIED ALL TRADITIONAL DIETS, BUT UP TIL NOW HAVE BEEN TO AFRAID TO TRY ANYTHING MORE DRASTIC. ANY HELP THAT ANYONE COULD PROVIDE WOULD BE WELCOMED AND DEEPLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO EAD THIS AND FOR THIS WEB SITE - IT MAY SAVE MY SANITY.

I experienced proton beam therapy at HCL for a remaining portion of a chordoma of the C2/3 area. The surgery was done at Univ. of Md. Jan.,1998 and treatment received July, 1998. There was little or no side effects and thus far held the remaining portion of the tumor at bay. Thanks to Dr. Munzenrider, Pat, Ena and Elliot. Thanks, to Hope Lodge who housed us for three months. The drivers who took me to treatment and all those who helped make it easy to be away from home. You are unselfishly devoted and I am most grateful. If anyone out there has questions or comments about chordomas or the treatment you may contact me at bam_AT_ccomm_DOT_com

Topamax can be Life Threatening I am a 23yr old female and have been on Topamax for 2 years now to prevent grand mal seizures. This is after having been on other anti-seizure drugs initially, which i could not tolerate their side effects. These other drugs were Dilantin, Klonopin, Tegretol. Treatment has always been only one drug at a time.I went from one to the next over the last three and a half years. I have suffered from the terrible fatigue, inability to think, and hair loss, but the most damaging to my health is my weight loss. My normal weight prior to the Topamax use was 125 lbs, which was ideal at 5'5". Im know at 95 lbs. and a bag of bones. I have no appetite and no desire to eat. Do other people on Topamax long term end up this way? I don't know what to do. My dosage was reduced one time by the doctor and I had a terrible seizure.I am so fearful of stopping the Topamax for seizure will be certain,as the doctor has confirmed.I am also scared that continued weight loss could be fatal. Is there any way to resolve this dilemma?

I have had a recurrence of a chordoma in the sacral area. It has again been surgically removed. I subsequently had proton beam treatment at the Loma Linda Medical Center in California, which should prevent another recurrence. I am very enthusiastic about this treatment. If anyone would like to hear of my personal experience with proton beam, they are welcome to contact me.

Hello, I'm a friend of the Loma Linda Proton Center, Dr. Yonemoto & others. I write particle information in a newsletter for America Century 21 "The Laryngectomee". Some 15 monthly newsletters have carried the importance of Proton Radiation Therapy over the past two years. Our laryngectomee Association/club are advocates in the realm of getting HMO's to pay for Proton & Hyperbaric Treatments when they are needed and not 90 days after the windwo of opportunity closes. I am a patient that received proton therapy following total laryngectomee. It was not necessary to use other radiation or chemotherapy, that was April 1999. Thank You, Don

My father had a shunt put in due to hydrocephalus. He is 72 years old. Since 11/20/00, our family has been in and out of hospitals, rehab.centers, you name it. He had a sub-dural hemotoma and many other complications after the shunt was put in. His cognitive ability is affected to a small degree as well as his short term memory. I could write a book on the stress my family and I have shared with my father. I feel that any moment my body is going to collaspe and my mind is so very tired. Can someone please direct me to some type of support group. I pray to God you can because I just feel I can't handle the stress anymore and I have to work and try to go on. It is so hard. The dad I once knew is gone.

I had surgery at Mass General for a clivus chordoma in 1995 followed by 44 doses of proton beam at cyclotron under the care of Dr. Liebsch. I was very lucky to be one of the few who live nearby and did not have to relocate for treatment! I had a recurrence last year and had surgery at Mt. Sinai(NYC) and my 6 month scan shows no visible signs of tumor. I would be happy to share my experiences with anyone out there.

Even after 10 yrs. my Tumor still shows shrinkage, up to 3/8" of an inch in some places. I thought I would share this for anyone thinking of this treatment.

Hi. I have a chordoma tumor, origin probably from the second rib off the spine. It has been resected twice, the first resection off the apex of the lung, the second was attached to my jugular vein. They said they got it all, and I have not had radiation therapy of any kind. Now within 6 months, they believe it has metastisized to the lung and chest wall. Has anyone taken the natural route to try to aleviate tumor growth? Has anyone heard of mgn-3? Has anyone tried shitake/maitake mushroom extracts? This is my next move. Would love to hear your comments. Annie Pacelli

Hi,I am wanting to some research of Malignant Brain Tumors as my Late Father died of one back in 1968 aged 44. Also, his three older Brothers died of Brain Tumors at later dates for the past 20-30 years! Still miss my Father very much. He started out as having a Tumor of the Inner Ear as large as a Golf Ball! The Specialists said, they would of liked to of operated when it (the tumor) was as big as a pea! My Father had seen the same Specialist 13 years prior too this!! He died on the 10 of November 1968. They day before Remembrance Day here in Australia! I would very much like to correspond with anyone who has had/have a Brain Tumor. One of my favourite Actors died back on August 31st 1993 after being diagnosed with a Malignant Brain Tumor. This is not the only reason why I am interested to know more, but as we have Cancer on both sides of our Family! I do hope to hear from anyone, anytime. Thankyou also for this very interesting WebPage! All the Best to Everyone, hopefully there will be a cure for all Cancers including Brain Tumors! sincerely Helen Harvey Australia.

I am doing a little research on a type of cyclotron where an accelerated particle (i.e. proton) in a cyclotron is recycled by employing a thin-foil type of target (i.e. Be) to produce excess amount of neutrons. I am aware of a syncrotron system where it uses a storage ring to recycle a particle. Does anyone know of any of these concepts being used or published? Thanks.
