RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

June 2000 ~ onwards
Clinical Fellow
Department of Neurosurgery, University of Arizona

February 1999 - April 1999
Observer Neurosurgeon
Children's Hospital & Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.

Attending Neurosurgeon
Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh

July 1998 - December 1998
International Fellow of the Congress of Neurological Surgery
Barrow Neurological Institute in the Neurosurgery Department.

1997 - 1998
Research Fellow in Surgery of the Harvard Medical School in the Massachusetts General Hospital. The effects of pharmacological agents in reducing the extent of damage inflicted by permanent and temporary occlusion of major cerebral vessels of rats was studied during the year long tenure of Dr. Mahmood Hassan. This study produced significant resuts. This study revealed that Sodium Channel bloker used as an antiarrhythic agent can modulate the expression of lipid peroxidation product following middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats and this may suggest a new mechanism that can play an effective role as a neuroprotective agent in stroke. Thsi study will lead to a clinical trial with this as a potent neuroprotectant in stroke on evolution.

1993 - 1997
Post-graduation Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery of Kanazawa University School of Medicine, Japan. Clinical oriented research protocol on shunt related complications in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus in the ward and reported about the susceptibility of shunt devices with siphon regulatory properties to external pressure, valve implantation site and posture in the Journal of Neurosurgery. (Hassan M, Higashi S, Yamashita J: Risks in using siphon-reducing devices in adult patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus: bench test investigations with Delta valves, J Neurosurg 84:634-641,1996)

The degree of Ph.D. in neurosurgery was awarded as the dissertation on Risks in using siphon-reducing devices in adult patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus: bench test investigations with Delta valves was accepted by the Kanazawa University School of Medicine in March 1997
