Photoelectron
Research Project
Project Summary
The Photonic Radiosurgical
System is a unique interstitial radiosurgical device developed by
Photoelectron Corporation of Waltham, Massachusetts. This battery
powered, miniature x-ray generator is capable of irradiating tissue
up to 100 to 200 cGy per minute and has been developed for use in
patients with brain metastases. The device is implanted stereotactically
into the center of the lesion and then a radiation dose amounting
to approximately 1500 cGy is administered over a short period of
time. Phase I study of its safety was recently completed in December
of 1993 and currently a prospective randomized trial of its efficacy
in patients with multiple cerebral metastases is underway.
