The MGH Brain Aneurysm/ AVM Center
has formed a Brain AVM Support Group for patients and their families.
The purpose of this support group is to provide you with the educational
tools and emotional support needed to get you through this difficult
time. Our goal is to help alleviate fears and concerns through
education and group discussions. Issues such as the origin of
brain AVMs, the course of treatment, and overall prognosis
will be among the topics we will be discussing. The leaders
task is to support you while you recognize and hopefully resolve
concerns you may have regarding the procedures.
When patients are
first diagnosed with an AVM it is a very frightening and confusing
time for them and their loved ones. There are many questions they
want answered,
"How did this
happen to me?", "How long have I had this?", "Why
am I getting symptoms now?", "Can I be treated?"
Lack of knowledge about your diagnosis can lead to anxiety and
apprehension.
For the people who
have already been treated this will offer you the chance to help
people who are now in the same situation as you were. Who better
to help ease an individuals fear then someone who has already
gone through the process. You are the best educators.
Physicians and other
caregivers will also be available for you at these meetings. Communication
between patients, their families and health care providers is
very beneficial. Always remember that you are not alone. There
are many people willing to help you.
The group meets the
group meets every month, alternating Mondays and Fridays at Massachusetts
General Hospital
