PREFACE
[extract dated 1983]
Neurosurgery at
the Massachusetts General Hospital is now entering its eighth decade.
Many members of the Service, past residents, and fellows expressed
interest in a directory of those who have worked here in the past.
At first it was thought that a catalogue of names, addresses, and
the status of alumni would suffice. However, as a director was being
compiled, some suggested that a volume encompassing a history of
the Service, a description of the contributions to science and medicine
made h our graduates, and a view of neurosurgery at MGH today would
be more appropriate. Some four years later with man additions and
some evolution the interim goal has been reached. What follows is
the end result.
A number of individuals
have helped immensely. Particular thanks go to Drs. William H. Sweet,
Adelbert Ames III, H. Thomas Ballantine Jr., Jost J. Michelsen,
and Alfred Luessenhop, who helped gather the material. It was as
an interesting effort. To older graduates it may rekindle past associations
and provide a new perspective of an association that still continues.
The position of MGH in neurosurgery is traced through these many
years.
Some of the minutes
from past meetings of the Executive Committee of the Hospital, particularly
those from the earl I 900s relating to neurosurgery, were revealing.
The discourses describing the relationship between physician and
surgeon in that era were somewhat amusing, and some of those remarks
are reprinted in the pages that follow.
I am especially
grateful to Ann Delanev, Merri Morong, Jean Sheridan, Rachel Spilka,
and Jody Roberts for their invaluable assistance.
