Pain
links:
Surgery can dramatically benefit people
suffering from certain pain syndromes, particularly those characterized
by paroxysmal pain such as trigeminal and
glossopharyngeal neuralgia (though medications such as carbamazepine/Tegretol
are often also effective and should be tried first.) Chronic pain
not caused by direct pressure on nerves usually requires treatments
other than surgery. The following may be sources of useful information
for people (and their loved ones) experiencing such a pain syndrome.
Resources at MGH for such patients are abundant. The appropriate
resource here is usually best identified by calling the MGH Physician's
Referral Service . Resources related to chronic pain include
