The Massachusetts General Hospital is
a tertiary care facility. Its affiliated
pediatric facility is the MassGeneral
Hospital for Children, which includes
inpatient- and outpatient divisions.
There are training programs in all specialties
relevant to Neurosurgery including Neurology,
Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Anesthesia,
General Surgery, Internal Medicine,
Orthopedics, and Pediatrics. Onsite
facilities include LINAC and proton
beam radiosurgery, CT scanning, MRI,
angiography, radionucleotide scanning,
ultrasound, and electro-diagnostic testing
(including EEG, EMG, nerve conduction
studies, and MEG).
The hospital has an 899-bed capacity.
Of these, 84 are assigned to Neuroscience
in-patients. The Neurosurgery Service
has an average daily census of 42
inpatients. There are 45,713 hospital
admissions per year with 2,292 Neurosurgery
admissions and 2,323 discharges. In
addition there are 1,872 Neurology
admissions with an average daily census
of 35 inpatients.
The Neurosurgery Service performs
an average of five inpatient consultations
per day and an average of 10-15 Emergency
Ward consultations per day. Our residents
participate in all consultations.
This year the service will move to
a new state of the art facility -
the Lunder Building. This facility
will have six dedicated neurosurgical
operating rooms, two rooms with intra-operative
MRI, one room with intra-operative
CT, and two rooms with biplanar angiography.
There will also be a new larger 22-bed
intensive care unit that includes
an in-unit MRI and CT-PET scanner.
There will also be a new and larger
six-bed epilepsy monitoring unit,
and two new in-patient floors. This
new facility will significantly expand
our capacity and provide significantly
enhanced educational opportunities.
